Assisting With Rectal Suppositories
Material needed:
Suppository
Water soluble lubricant
Disposable glove
Toilet tissue
Hand washing supplies
Procedure:
Explain what you are going to do
Check care plan and medication sheet
Wash you hands
Obtain material listed above
Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
Assist client into bed and Sims' position
Remove clothing to expose anal area
Check label on suppositories for:
Right drug
Right dose
Right client
Right route
Right time
Unwrap suppository
Apply water soluble lubricant to suppository. Do not use petroleum jelly because it is not water soluble
Give glove to client to put on
Hand suppository to client to insert into rectum. Guide client's hand, if needed
Observe as client inserts medications and wipes anus with toilet tissue
Have client remove and discard glove into waste container
Assist client to wash hands
Discard used material in waste container
Have client record medication taken. The caregiver can record information if needed
Remind client to remain on side for 15 - 20 minutes to allow suppository to melt and medication to be absorbed
Wash your hands
Record what you have done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
