Helping Client to Dress
Material needed:
Outer clothing
Underwear
Socks
Shoes
Procedure:
Explain what you are going to do
Wash your hands
Obtain materials listed above
Arrange clothing in order of use
Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
Lower bed to lowest position. Lower rail on side where you are working
Help client to sit on side of bed, if possible. If client must stay in bed, place in supine position
Help client to put on undershirt or bra, shirt, or pajama top
Over - the - head type garment first. Pull neck of garment over client's head. Guide other arm into garment
Front - button or zipping type garment - place injured arm through sleeve first. Bring shirt to the back of client and guide the other arm into the sleeve
Help client to put on underwear, slacks, shorts, or pajama bottoms. If leg is injured, place into garment first, then other leg. Help client to stand at side of bed and pull up clothing to the waist. If client is in bed, help client to lift buttocks while you pull up the garments
Help client to put socks or stockings and footwear on
Make sure client is safe and comfortable
Place bed in the lowest position ( raise rail if needed )
Wash your hands
Record what you have done, Report any unusual conditions
